After mating, female wasps can survive through the winter while males and unfertilized wasps perish. By springtime, female wasps engage in a competition for dominance within the nest by laying eggs. After this contest, a single dominant queen emerges, relegating subordinate females to egg-laying duties. As new male and female wasps hatch and mate, the life cycle progresses until the queen dies, rendering the old nest obsolete.
