Interesting Carpenter Bee Facts & Information
Length: | 18-20 mm. |
Colour: | Resemble bumble bees, except abdomen is almost without hair, blue black and metallic in colour. |
Damage: | Exit / Entrance holes are 25 mm in diameter. |
The Eastern carpenter bee usually digs into facia, siding, porch beams, exterior columns, telephone poles, fence posts and trees. They can weaken structures with their excavations and defecation streaks can denote where the nests are.
Females will bore into wood for 15-20 cm to nest or use a natural or previously excavated gallery. This chamber is bored at right angles to the opening. The female provides about 6 cells with pollen and a single egg. These are then capped with wood for protection. The insects take 36 days to develop before they emerge as adults. The new adults will provide older nests with pollen as food during bad weather and to eat before they hibernate. Cold winter kills off a number of these insects. Males have no sting and females only strike when bothered.
