Interesting Cluster Fly Facts
Length: | 3-6mm. |
Colour: | Dark Grey. |
Additional features: | Yellow hairs at side of Thorax. |
Cluster flies resemble House flies. However, their sluggish behavior and wings that overlap when at rest sets them apart. They enter homes from August to September after “clustering” together over winter.
They hide in walls and attics. On warm days in spring, they come out by the hundreds to bask in the sun on outside walls or inside windows. Unfortunately, many become trapped in wall voids and die. These can form a source of food for Larder beetles, populations of which can build up rapidly. Wherever possible, dead flies should be swept up to prevent such infestations.
The adult fly lays its eggs in the soil. After hatching in 3-4 days, the larvae penetrate a specific species of earthworm on which they feed. Then they leave the earthworm to pupate briefly in the soil, emerging a month or so later as adults. Because of this life-cycle, Cluster fly issues occur in rural or urban areas where there are a number of earthworms.
