Appearance:
Adult drain flies are small (1/5 to 1/6 inch long), fuzzy or grey insects with hairy body and wings. The antennae have hairs and the wings give an appearance like a moth. They are weak fliers. Eggs have been known to be tiny, brown and are laid in bunches of 10 to 200. Larvae have no legs.
Life Cycle:
These insects reproduce in dirty water. These insects can be found in drains and overflow and compost. They have also been found in garbage.
Habitat:
Larvae feed on the rotting material. They mature in under two weeks and live in organic film. After 20 to 40 hours, new adults emerge. They eat flowers and dirty water. Adults are small enough to pass through tiny holes in screen doors.
Adult flies may become numerous inside. They can cause bronchial asthma.
