Interesting Pavement Ant Facts & Information
Length: | 3-4mm. |
Colour: | Brown to black. |
Other Features: | Head and thorax have fine parallel lines. |
The pavement ant, a common household pest, derives its name from making its home in pavement. Pavement ants nest between walls, in soil underneath sidewalk and patio slabs and in cracks or curbs along driveways, evident by the mound of dirt left behind on the pavement. They can also dwell under logs, bricks and stones. Although these pests rarely nest inside buildings, they can be found within walls and under floors and are considered a particular nuisance around structures with slab-on-grade concrete construction. Ranging in colour from brown to black, this species of ant measures approximately 2.5–4 mm (1/8-1/10-inches) with antennae and parallel lines along the head and thorax.
A typical pavement ant colony consists of multiple queens and many worker ants.
The pavement ant feeds throughout the year on insects and will eat almost any type of human food, preferring the sweet and greasy varieties. Pavement ant workers can forage for food as much as 30 feet away from their nests, arranging trails back and forth from the food source to the colony. Large groups of these ants can quickly infest a garden patio or kitchen area. Although not aggressive, pavement ants can sting and bite to defend the colony.
